Magpie Chatter ~ Round 2

The Magpie army rolled home victorious from last weeks start to host Kapunda at O’b Park for the first time. The works over the summer with council were still evident with plenty of sand flying and bugger all bounce of the footy but we were on our own deck under a beautiful sky!

The main game was always going to be a stern test for the ‘Pies, as the stars were rolled out from Kapunda. A very even start saw there being only 1 point difference with the Bombers kicking with a flukey but influential breeze. An incredibly fast paced and highly skilled contest opened up with the margin for most of the day being around a straight kick. Leigh Westhoff and Nick Schmidt in the middle were constantly driving the ball forward to Matt Underwood, Ben Britton and Ben Gordon who all presented well, the defence of Luke Snowden, Matt Grocke and Parker Neldner stood tall however it was the big fella in Angus Kurtze who continually gave us first use of the ball in an impressive display. The bombers kicked a couple of goals late to stretch the margin to 19 points, however we are looking forward to the repeat game later in the year.

Reserves started into the breeze and a talented Kapunda bolted out of the blocks to get to a 3 goal lead early. Signs were a little concerning however the lads worked hard in the following three quarters to keep the opposition to just one goal whilst having 16 shots on goal to set a standard for belief and back up football that provided the win. Great rebound football and switch defensive plays allowed for the ball to be quickly sent back into attack thwarting forward thrusts of the red and blacks. Exciting new player Aaron Whistler was influential, stoic and hard Tom Smith stepped up in his new role as Vice captain whilst Joey Thompson, young Liam Birchard Aiden Rowett and Lachie Agars all performed admirably to secure a really strong win.

The under 17’s won well and are continuing to develop into a solid and even unit. Players were rotated through different positions and showed great depth and adaptability, typified by captain Will Loffler’s 3 goal final quarter. All are worthy of a mention. Brett Dowse was impressive in his first official game in black and white, Tom Falkenberg kicked 4 and Lachlan Miller was creative with every possession. Bailey Smith ruled the back half and James Madden the forward half.

Another good day at the park for the under 15 brigade against Kapunda on their home soil in perfect conditions
Dylan Birchard started in fine form presenting well and looking to be a solid option for the Magpies. Jonah Whitelum had another good game in the midfield and had good support with Smart, Brooks and Westbrook
Unfortunately for Kapunda our boys were too strong all over the ground with Benson Heintze and Aaron Bert controlling the backline and the game was in our favour by half time. All of our first year players held their positions well this week and a mention should go to Thomas Huezenroeder and Mitch Manning who had a great game.

We look forward to getting over to Freeling in a fortnight to test out the ‘Legs and get back into the winning circle.
