Magpie Chatter – Round 4 v Angaston

The annual Heidenreich Cup match was hosted by Angaston in fine but blustery conditions. The game right up until lemons was a very tight tussle, with the Panthers ensuring the fast Tanunda playmakers were well held. Lots of smothering and ball ups played into the hosts hands, and after we lost Matthew Underwood and Leigh Westhoff to injury the structures loosened allowing Angaston to race away to a comfortable win to take the cup for the first time in 11 years. Lessons from this include improved accountability and a harder mindset to ensure games like this don’t get away from us. Back on the track this week with greater intensity and getting ready for South who will be up for the fight.
The reserves came up against a side that was also winless. The game was actually evenly contested with Angaston doing their best to turn the game into an arm wrestle. Again a lapse in work rate cost us the lead together with being wasteful with the ball in general play and in front of goal. To Angaston’s credit they made it too hard for us to make up the difference. The best performers for us were Kyle Coleman, Tom Smith and Gareth Davis. The essence of a good team is there but we need to start playing like a team more consistently. We look forward to seeing an improvement.
The U15s got the points but have plenty to improve upon. Failing to set the tone with a strong start they were only 2 points up at half time. Coach Bob asked for more talk, structure and hard, team play and the boys responded with 8 goals in the second half to win by 41 points. In the absence of some senior players, leaders Mudge, Hoklas, Clasohm and Jonah Whitelum stood up while Jackson Lee was best on ground over the 4 quarters. Jordan Brook is settling in as a strong leading full forward and finish with 3 goals.
The U13 Black team travelled down to Williamstown to take on the Barossa Districts Blue team. The boys started full of running and showed great form with Tate Manning playing a great game and Myles Allert holding it all together down back. As the boys began to tire Barossa got on top, but the boys kept on fighting to the end of the game and did themselves proud. Goal kickers for the game were – Jed Habermann, Shay Linke, Finn Reed, Aidan Sonntag and Byron Stevenson.
Tanunda U11 Black V Angaston FC (Blue) on Angaston Oval, A delayed start and a game reduced to three quarters started at 7:45 pm as the Medi-Vac chopper took off from Angaston Oval. Our lads were clawed by the Panther’s savage tackling early. They responded well, put their heads down and continued to apply pressure and never gave up. The effort and determination of Hayden Sphehr and the flashy persistence of Jack Collins raised our spirits and encoraged others to lift. Well done to Cameron Bishop who showed brilliant skills. The final siren saw TFC “Men in Black” evenly matched and confident we would have run it out if there was a 4th quarter!!
This week the under 9 “magpies” came up against the Barossa Blue team. It took the boys a little while to get going with Barossa playing well in the 1st half. But after halftime the magpies switched on and matched Barossa in the second half and started to move the ball around a lot better. The awards this week went to Ryley Skarstrom, Jacob Wood, Angas Ninnes and Ryan Ellis.
Tanunda U9 Black vs. Angaston White, Angaston came to play but a resolute Tanunda defence made it hard for the opposition to score. Fantastic rebound footy from the backs and centres gave our forwards plenty of opportunities to attack the goals. Pleasing to see the boys pushing back quickly after a mark and then looking for a team mate to pass the ball to down the field. This weeks awards went to Walter Holmes, Sam Heinicke and Leo Henschke.
Ladies “Pink” Day for National Breast Cancer Foundation at O ‘b Park, a few tickets are still available from Toni Brooks for $50 each. There will be teas Thursday night, with the new kitchen going in and teas and entertainment on Saturday evening after the game. Go you Magpies.
