On a wet and foggy morning the faithful returned to OB Park with the hope that the Heidenreich Cup and Kleinig medal will remain with the Tanunda Magpies, and as the day progressed, and the ground conditions worsened, we knew that Angaston were going to give a good account. The only blemish on the scorecard was the Senior Colts, however the young Panthers are a talented lot and will do good things in the future, however our lads cannot hang their heads too low in a manful display.
Thanks to the Heidenriech and Kleinig families for their support of the day, some stories told and truths stretched. Then to the footy…..
The Tanunda A grade had a good win and now sit a game clear in fourth spot at the halfway mark of the season. The boys started well and looked set for a comfortable win, but Angaston fought back and turned it in to a slog. It was our 10th Heidenreich Cup victory in a row and Luke Boehm played a belter to win the Kleinig Medal. Craig Underwood and Parker Neldner revelled in the conditions and were also good, while Ben Newberry continued his strong form.
Well done to all reserves players for defeating Angaston by 25 points. Our boys showed excellent character to achieve our goal of our first win for the season on home soil. We came out and got on top early and continued this through to half time allowing them to score only 1 goal. Angaston came at us strong in the third before we steadied late in the quarter. The boys then dug deep in the last to hold off a side that battled right to the end. An even contribution from everyone made it difficult to pick best players. It was great to see players new to the club (Joe Thompson, Connor Peacock) standing tall and featuring in the best. Well done to Blake Lockett for kicking 4 goals and getting in the best.
Senior Colts this week had a tough task against a side that had its full complement of Centrals Players, Tanunda boys did extremely well in the first 3 quarters giving the talented Angaston boys a hard fought run, however in the last quarter the boys could not keep up, having 8 goals kicked against them in the last quarter. Senior Colts are a side that is improving every week, the boys ability at times can match it with the best in the Barossa, some self-belief, realising they are just as big and strong as the opponent will see us with more wins. Best Players: Jett De-Ruiter, Eddie Laucke, Ryan Creece, Josh Brimer, Austin Nankerville. Special mentions to Jayden Hage, Josh Page, Sam Dunn and Ben Biagi.
The Under 15 boys started with a tightly contested first half with great defence from both teams. Rain over the past week had made the ground into mush which proved on the scoreboard as we kicked 15 behinds. The defence held up strong in the last quarter only conceding a behind. Fantastic first half of the season finishing 5 wins 3 losses and a top 4 spot. Tough test this week against GC, let’s come home with the win
Under 13 White came up against Angaston on Saturday morning with the majority of the game being played in foggy conditions. The muddy conditions meant that the direct approach to goal was the preferred method of attack and the boys did enough to prevail in a tight contest. Another great team effort with notable efforts from Jonah, Will, Westie, and Jaydos.
The U 13 Black team continued to display their impressive total team performance with everyone contributing to secure a hard fought win over Nuri. The score line of 2-6 to 2-0 indicates that the Tanunda boys dominated the possession count but couldn’t capitalize with more majors. Liam Ellis played his best game for the season in what was a game where all played well. It was pleasing to see the boys being able to string together some good handballs in slippery difficult conditions showing the excellent progress the side has made this season.
So we are at the halfway point and with wins in the bank, the second half looks to be a tightly fought contest, not only to knock off a couple above us but to make sure we hold our spots in the finals race. Gawler centrals will prove to be a tough adversary this week, with inclement weather predicted the heavy ground will only continue to play a factor.
We have also had to push the next event, The Magpie Red and Rump night out to the 26th July, post Willaston game, with Senior presentations at the event. Details to follow.
The annual Sportsmans Night will be held on the 27th July, at Langmeil Winery with John “Sammy” Newman attending, and our Sponsrs Day will be 2nd August at home V Nuriootpa.
Go you Magpies!
